The Challenge

The original 1952 kitchen had metal cabinets, a freestanding range with no vent hood, a single-basin cast iron sink, and knob-and-tube wiring that had been partially updated over the decades. The homeowners loved the craftsman character of their home and did not want a cookie-cutter modern kitchen — they wanted a design that felt true to the era while meeting modern standards for safety, storage, and appliance integration. The small footprint (140 sq ft) made every inch critical.

Our Solution

We designed the kitchen around period-appropriate inset shaker cabinetry in a sage green paint finish with oil-rubbed bronze hardware — a look that nods to mid-century style without being a replica. A custom 6-foot butcher block island provides prep space and casual seating without overwhelming the compact footprint. The electrical was brought fully to code with a new subpanel and dedicated appliance circuits. A slim-profile vent hood was installed above the new gas range. Open shelving flanks the window above the sink, preserving the natural light that is the room's best feature. Soapstone countertops were chosen for their period-appropriate patina and durability.

The Result

The kitchen feels like it belongs to the 1952 craftsman home — but everything behind the surfaces is brand new and code-compliant. The homeowners gained 60% more storage from the custom cabinetry, the island transformed their workflow, and the soapstone counters develop character with age rather than looking dated. The Garden City building inspector commented that it was one of the best remodels of a mid-century home he had seen.
