A 1960s galley kitchen transformed into an open-concept modern kitchen with custom shaker cabinetry, quartz countertops, and a 9-foot island — redesigned for how the family actually uses the space.
The original kitchen was a narrow galley layout with dark laminate counters, limited storage, and no connection to the adjacent dining and living areas. A load-bearing wall separated the kitchen from the rest of the main floor, making the space feel cramped and isolated. The existing plumbing and electrical systems were original to the 1960s home and needed complete replacement.
We removed the load-bearing wall and installed a structural LVL beam to open the kitchen to the dining area. The layout was completely redesigned around a 9-foot island with seating for four, a dedicated prep zone, and a cleanup zone with a farmhouse sink. Custom maple shaker cabinets with soft-close hardware were installed floor to ceiling, maximizing storage. All plumbing and electrical were brought to code, including dedicated circuits for new appliances.
The finished kitchen features 40% more counter space, double the cabinet storage, and a seamless open floor plan that connects the kitchen, dining, and living areas. The homeowners report that the kitchen is now the center of their daily life and hosting — exactly the transformation they envisioned.
