The Challenge

The homeowners liked their kitchen — white perimeter cabinetry, a tiled backsplash, hardwood floors — but the island was the weak point. It was mostly open countertop with stools pulled up to it, and it did not give them the storage a busy kitchen needs. They wanted a real working island without paying for a full kitchen remodel, and the new piece had to look intentional next to cabinetry that was staying.

Our Solution

We measured the room and designed the island around how the family actually uses the kitchen. The working side facing the range and sink is a bank of drawers with a microwave drawer built into the cabinet run, which takes the microwave off the countertop. The back side carries 12-inch-deep cabinets, so the island stores things on both faces without eating into the walkway. The cabinetry is a black painted shaker style to contrast with the white perimeter, topped with a matte black quartz countertop that extends 12 inches past the cabinets for seating. Overhead, one existing pendant was moved and a new one added so three globe pendants now sit centered over the new island.

The Result

The kitchen gained an 8-foot island with storage on both sides, the microwave moved into the island, and a black-on-black focal point now anchors the white kitchen. Because the perimeter cabinets, counters and backsplash stayed put, the homeowners got the biggest functional upgrade in the room without the cost or disruption of a full remodel.

Kitchen Remodeling in Eagle: Questions About This Project

How big is the new kitchen island in this Eagle project?

The island is 8 feet long and 52 inches wide, with a matte black quartz countertop that overhangs the cabinets by 12 inches for seating. The working side is a bank of drawers with a built-in microwave drawer, and the back side has 12-inch-deep cabinets.

Can you replace a kitchen island without remodeling the whole kitchen?

Yes. On this Eagle project we replaced only the island and adjusted the pendant lighting above it. The perimeter cabinets, countertops, backsplash and hardwood floors stayed in place, and the new island was designed to contrast with the existing white cabinetry.

Where can a microwave go in a kitchen island?

A microwave drawer can be built into the island's base cabinets, which frees up countertop space and keeps the microwave at a comfortable height. In this kitchen it sits in the drawer bank on the side of the island facing the range.

Why choose a matte black quartz countertop for an island?

Quartz is non-porous and does not need the periodic sealing natural stone does, and a matte finish cuts glare under pendant lights. On a black island it creates a single dark focal point against white perimeter cabinets.
