A custom 500 sq ft composite deck with aluminum railing, built-in bench seating, integrated stair lighting, and a pergola — designed for Idaho's four-season outdoor living.
The homeowners had a small, rotting pressure-treated wood deck that was too small for their family and unsafe for their grandchildren. They wanted a large, low-maintenance outdoor living space that could handle Idaho's weather extremes — hot summers, cold winters, and everything in between. The yard had a 2-foot grade change that complicated the design.
We designed a multi-level composite deck that worked with the grade change, creating a main deck level for dining and a lower step-down lounge area. Trex Transcend composite decking was selected for its durability and 25-year warranty. We installed aluminum railing with cable infill for an unobstructed view of the foothills. Built-in bench seating along one edge doubled as storage. A 12×12 attached pergola provides shade. LED stair and post cap lighting was integrated for evening use.
The family now has a true outdoor living room that they use from April through October. The composite decking requires no staining or sealing, the aluminum railing will not rust, and the integrated lighting extends usability into the evening hours. The multi-level design turned the grade challenge into a design feature.

“We went from a tiny rotting deck to an outdoor living room. The pergola shade is perfect for summer and the lights make it magical at night. Best investment we have made in the house.”
