Homeowners tend to budget tile by the price per square foot of the tile itself. In a shower, the setting labour usually exceeds the material cost, and it is driven by decisions that have nothing to do with the price of the tile.

Adjust in this order
First — fittings and glass specification
- Move from frameless to semi-frameless, or reduce the panel size
- Choose a simpler shower head and valve trim
- Defer secondary outlets such as body sprays or a hand shower
Keep the valve body capable of what you might add later, even if the trim is simple now.
Second — tile format and layout
- Choose a format that sets efficiently rather than a mosaic
- Use a straightforward layout instead of a patterned one
- Tile to a sensible height rather than full height everywhere
This reduces labour, which is where the saving actually is — not the tile price.
Third — scope of features
- One well-placed niche instead of several
- A removable seat rather than a built bench
- A curbed shower rather than curbless, where accessibility does not require otherwise
Curbless is a structural decision — deferring it means it will realistically never happen.

Every item here requires demolishing the finished shower to change. This is the false economy that produces the expensive failure.

1.Budgeting tile by material price alone
Setting labour usually exceeds material cost, and it is driven by format, pattern and detailing rather than by the tile's price per square foot.
2.Underestimating frameless glass
It is a fabricated, tempered, measured product and frequently one of the two largest items in the shower.
3.Deciding on curbless after demolition has started
The drainage plane has to be achieved within the floor structure. Once framing is closed up, the option is effectively gone.
4.Economising on the valve because the trim looks the same
The trim is visible and replaceable; the valve body is buried. They are not the same decision.
5.Retaining an existing pan to save money
It breaks waterproofing continuity between old and new work, at the exact junction most likely to fail.
6.Adding niches after framing
Niches are framed, waterproofed and tiled as an integrated detail. Retrofitting means reopening completed work.
What are the separate components of a walk-in shower?
A walk-in shower is not a single product. It is an assembly of roughly eight distinct items: the shower pan or sloped base, the waterproofing system, the drain, the valve and its rough-in, the wall substrate, the tile or surround material, the glass enclosure, and the fittings. Each is separately specified, separately priced and separately capable of moving your total. Understanding this is what allows a shower budget to be adjusted intelligently — you can change the glass specification without touching the waterproofing, but you cannot change the waterproofing later without removing the tile.
Which part of a shower costs the most?
It varies by specification, but glass and tile labour are the two items most likely to dominate. A frameless glass enclosure is a fabricated, measured, tempered product and often costs more than homeowners expect — sometimes more than the tile it encloses. Tile labour scales with the complexity of the work rather than the area: small-format tile, intricate patterns, niches, benches and curbless thresholds all multiply setting time. The waterproofing system and the valve are comparatively modest line items whose importance is out of all proportion to their share of the cost.
Is a curbless shower more expensive?
Generally yes, because the drainage plane has to be achieved within the floor structure rather than above it. That usually means recessing the subfloor or building up the surrounding floor so the shower floor can slope to the drain without a curb to contain the water. Over a framed floor with accessible joists this is achievable; on a concrete slab it means cutting and lowering the slab in the shower area. The waterproofing detail is also more demanding because there is no curb acting as a secondary barrier. It is a genuinely superior result for accessibility and appearance, but it is not a finish-level choice — it is a structural one that has to be decided before demolition.
Do niches and benches add much cost?
More than their size suggests, because both are waterproofing and tile-labour items rather than material items. A niche requires framing between studs, waterproofing treated as a critical detail with multiple internal corners, and tile cut and mitred to fit. A bench requires structural support, a slope so water drains off it, and waterproofing continuous with the surrounding walls. Both are worth having — a niche in particular removes the need for hanging caddies — but they should be planned at design stage, since adding them after framing means reopening work.
Can I save money by keeping the existing shower pan?
Rarely, and it is usually a false economy. The pan and the waterproofing beneath it are the components most likely to have deteriorated, and they are the ones whose failure causes the most expensive damage. Retaining an existing pan also means the new tile has to terminate against old work, which compromises the waterproofing continuity that makes the assembly function. If the existing pan is genuinely recent and sound it can occasionally be retained, but that judgement should follow an inspection after the surround is removed, not a decision made to protect a budget.
