Shower Remodel Timeline in Boise — Iron Crest Remodel

Shower Remodel Timeline in Boise

A realistic, phase-by-phase look at how long shower renovations take in Boise and the Treasure Valley. From planning through final walkthrough, know what to expect at every stage.

Timeline by Project Scope

Not every shower remodel is the same scope. Here is how long each type of project typically takes from start of construction to completion in the Boise market.

Cosmetic Re-Tile

5 - 7 Days

Remove existing tile, install new waterproofing membrane and tile over existing substrate. No plumbing changes, no glass replacement, no structural modifications. The fastest path to an updated shower appearance. Best suited for showers where the framing, plumbing, and substrate are in good condition.

Standard Walk-In

1.5 - 2.5 Weeks

Full demolition, new waterproofing, tile installation, valve replacement, and new glass enclosure. The existing drain location is typically preserved. This is the most common shower remodel scope in Boise and represents the best balance of transformation and practical timeline. Add 1–2 weeks for glass fabrication after tile is complete.

Tub-to-Shower Conversion

2 - 3 Weeks

Tub removal, plumbing relocation (drain and supply lines), new subfloor as needed, full waterproofing, tile, glass enclosure, and new fixtures. The additional complexity of removing the tub and modifying the plumbing rough-in adds time compared to a standard shower renovation. Learn more about our tub-to-shower conversion service.

Luxury Spa Shower

2.5 - 4 Weeks

Full custom build with curbless entry, subfloor modification, linear drain, multiple showerheads, body sprays, thermostatic valve system, heated floor, and premium tile. The most complex shower project with the most trades involved (tile, plumbing, electrical, glass). Custom glass fabrication adds 1–3 weeks after tile completion.

Detailed Phase Breakdown

A standard to full shower remodel moves through distinct phases. Understanding each phase helps you plan around disruptions and track progress. Here is the sequence we follow at Iron Crest Remodel.

Planning & Design

1 - 2 Weeks

In-home consultation to measure your existing shower, assess plumbing and substrate conditions, and discuss your goals. Tile and fixture selections are finalized during this phase. We provide a detailed scope of work and estimate before any commitment. This is also when we determine if your project requires a plumbing permit.

  • In-home measurement and assessment
  • Tile, glass, and fixture selection
  • Detailed scope and pricing
  • Permit determination and submission

Material Ordering

1 - 3 Weeks

Tile, waterproofing materials, fixtures, and the shower valve rough-in kit are ordered. Most tile is available from local Boise suppliers within 1 week. Specialty tile, imported stone, or custom-ordered fixtures may take 2–3 weeks. We confirm all materials are on-site or scheduled for delivery before demolition begins.

  • Tile and waterproofing materials
  • Valve rough-in kit and trim
  • Niche insert or blocking material
  • Showerheads and trim accessories

Demolition

1 Day

Existing tile, substrate, and fixtures are removed. If converting a tub, the tub is disconnected and removed. Dust barriers are installed to protect the bathroom and adjacent rooms. The framing, subfloor, and existing plumbing are inspected for damage, rot, or inadequate conditions. Any hidden issues are identified at this stage and communicated to you immediately.

Plumbing Rough-In

1 - 2 Days

New shower valve is installed at the correct height and position. Supply lines are connected and tested for leaks. If the drain is being relocated or a linear drain installed, drain plumbing is modified. Showerhead stub-outs are positioned. For multi- head systems (rain head + handheld + body sprays), additional supply lines are run. A plumbing rough-in inspection is scheduled if a permit was pulled.

Substrate & Curb

1 Day

Cement board (Durock, HardieBacker) or Schluter Kerdi-Board is installed on all shower walls. The shower curb is built from stacked cement board or a pre-formed foam curb. For curbless showers, the subfloor is modified to create the necessary recess for a flush threshold. A pre-sloped shower pan (mortar bed or foam pan system) is installed on the shower floor to direct water toward the drain.

Waterproofing

1 - 2 Days

The most critical phase. Schluter Kerdi sheet membrane is applied to walls with pre-formed corners and pipe collars at all penetrations. Liquid-applied membrane (RedGard, Hydroban) is rolled onto the shower floor in two coats, each at the manufacturer-specified mil thickness. Every seam, corner, curb, and penetration is sealed to create a continuous waterproof envelope. This step prevents the water damage we see most frequently in failed Boise-area showers. Read our waterproofing systems guide for detailed information.

Tile Installation

3 - 5 Days

The phase that takes the longest and has the greatest visual impact. Wall tile is set first, working from the bottom up with a level ledger board to ensure straight courses. Floor tile follows, sloped precisely to the drain. Niche tile, bench seat tile, and curb cap tile are installed. After setting, the tile cures overnight before grouting. Grout is applied, cleaned, and sealed (or epoxy grout is used for a maintenance-free finish). Complex patterns and natural stone add 1–2 extra days.

Glass Measurement & Fabrication

1 - 3 Weeks (wait time)

Once tile is complete, the glass fabricator visits to take precise field measurements. Frameless glass must be custom-cut and polished to exact dimensions — there is zero tolerance for error since there is no frame to hide gaps. Fabrication takes 1 to 3 weeks depending on the season and fabricator workload. During this wait period, your shower is usable with a temporary shower curtain if needed.

Fixtures & Glass Installation

1 Day

Showerhead(s), handheld unit, valve trim plate, and handle are installed. The glass enclosure is set and secured with appropriate hardware. All connections are tested for leaks and proper operation. Silicone caulk is applied at all glass-to-tile and tile- to-fixture junctions. Final plumbing inspection is scheduled if a permit was pulled.

Final Inspection & Walkthrough

1 Day

If a permit was pulled, the final plumbing and/or electrical inspection is completed. We conduct a detailed walkthrough with you to review every element: tile quality, grout consistency, glass alignment, fixture operation, and water drainage. Any punch list items are noted and addressed. We provide care instructions for your specific tile, grout, and glass finish, including hard-water maintenance recommendations for Boise conditions.

What Affects Your Shower Timeline in Boise

Several factors specific to the Boise market and your individual project can extend or shorten the timeline. Understanding these helps set realistic expectations.

Frameless Glass Lead Times

Custom frameless glass is the longest lead-time item after tile is complete. Boise-area glass fabricators typically need 1 to 3 weeks from field measurement to installation. During peak season (spring/summer), lead times may extend. Semi-frameless and framed enclosures have shorter lead times since they use standard sizing with more tolerance.

Tile Availability

Most porcelain and ceramic tile is available from local Boise suppliers within days. Natural stone, imported European tile, and specialty mosaics may require 2 to 4 weeks for delivery. We always confirm tile availability and lead time before scheduling demolition to prevent mid-project delays.

Hidden Water Damage

Demolition may reveal water damage, mold, or rotted framing behind the existing tile — especially in Boise homes built before 2000 where waterproofing was often inadequate or absent. Remediation adds 1 to 3 days for framing repairs and mold treatment. We budget a 10–15% contingency for this possibility in all estimates.

Plumbing Modifications

Relocating the drain, adding body spray supply lines, or replacing galvanized piping with modern PEX or copper adds 1 to 2 days to the plumbing rough-in phase. Homes in Boise's Bench and Vista neighborhoods (1960s–1970s construction) commonly need pipe replacement due to 50+ years of hard-water corrosion.

Curbless Subfloor Work

Curbless shower installations require modifying the subfloor to create a recessed area for the pre-slope and drain. This adds 1 to 2 days to the framing/substrate phase. On upper floors, floor joist modification is more complex and may require an additional day. On slab foundations, concrete channeling is needed.

Permit Processing Time

If your shower remodel requires a plumbing permit, plan for 1 to 2 weeks of processing time from the City of Boise or Ada County. We submit permits early in the planning phase so approval is typically in hand before materials arrive. Inspection scheduling usually requires 24-hour advance notice. See our shower permit guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about shower remodel scheduling and timelines in the Boise area.

How long does a shower remodel take in Boise?

A standard shower remodel in Boise takes 1 to 3 weeks of active construction, depending on tile complexity, waterproofing method, and glass lead time. A simple re-tile with existing plumbing can be completed in 5 to 7 business days. A full gut-and-rebuild with custom tile, a curbless threshold, frameless glass, and relocated plumbing typically takes 2 to 3 weeks. Add 1 to 2 weeks for frameless glass fabrication after tile is complete.

What is the biggest cause of shower remodel delays?

Frameless glass enclosure lead times are the most common cause of delays. Glass cannot be measured until tile is complete, and fabrication takes 1 to 3 weeks in the Boise market. Ordering tile early, confirming availability, and selecting the glass fabricator before the project starts are the best ways to keep the timeline on track.

Can I use another bathroom during my shower remodel?

Yes. Unlike a kitchen remodel that affects daily meal preparation, a shower remodel only takes one shower out of service. We recommend having access to at least one other bathroom during the project. If your home has only one full bathroom, we can sometimes phase the work to maintain shower access for part of the project, though this may extend the timeline.

What time of year is best for a shower remodel in Boise?

Any time of year works well for a shower remodel since it is entirely interior work. However, late fall and winter (October through February) often offer better contractor availability and potentially shorter glass fabrication lead times. This is Boise's off-peak season for construction, which can translate to more flexible scheduling.

How long does waterproofing a shower take?

Schluter Kerdi sheet membrane waterproofing can be completed in 1 day for a standard shower. Liquid-applied membranes (RedGard, Hydroban) require 2 coats with drying time between each, typically taking 1 to 2 days depending on temperature and humidity. We never rush waterproofing — it is the most critical step in the entire project.
