Adding an Island to a Kitchen That Never Had One

The retrofit question is not whether an island fits — it is whether power, drainage and ventilation can reach the middle of the room, and what is under the floor when they try.

Quick answer

Adding an island to a kitchen that never had one is usually possible where the clearances work. What sets the cost is not the island — it is the route to it. An island with no services is a cabinetry project. An island with a receptacle, a sink or a cooktop needs a path under the floor, and whether your kitchen sits over a crawlspace or a concrete slab will change that cost more than any other single decision you make.

The retrofit question, framed properly

An island added during original construction is trivially serviced — the trades were already in the floor. Adding one later means reaching a point in the middle of a finished room, and that is a different project with a different cost structure.

What is under your floor decides the budget

Every service an island needs has to arrive from somewhere. In a retrofit, that means travelling horizontally beneath the finished floor to a point with no walls near it.

Ranch homes on slabs are common across the Treasure Valley, and a slab is the single most frequent reason an island sink gets value-engineered out of a project. It is worth establishing your floor construction before you fall in love with a layout that assumes plumbing.

Power — and the Idaho rule most national guidance gets wrong

Island receptacles changed nationally in the 2023 NEC, and Idaho then amended the change. This is the detail most worth knowing before your electrician arrives.

For many years the NEC permitted island and peninsula receptacles to be installed on the vertical sides of the cabinetry. The 2023 edition removed that allowance in jurisdictions adopting it unamended, on the safety rationale that a cord hanging from the side of an island can be pulled down by a small child.

Note also that a receptacle serving an island is not mandatory under the 2023 NEC; where one is omitted, provision must be made for adding one later. And under Idaho's amendments, arc-fault protection in one- and two-family dwellings applies only to circuits supplying bedrooms — so an island circuit is not an AFCI circuit in Idaho, though GFCI protection for kitchen countertop receptacles continues to apply. Verify the final detail with your electrician and inspector rather than with a national article.

Putting a sink in the island

A sink is the most-requested island feature and the most constrained. The constraint is not the supply — it is the drain and its vent.

A drain relies on gravity. It must fall continuously from the island to the point where it meets the existing waste line, which sets a maximum distance for any given floor depth. Every fixture trap also requires a protecting vent, and Idaho's plumbing code is the 2017 Idaho State Plumbing Code, based on the 2015 Uniform Plumbing Code — not the International Plumbing Code that much national content assumes. Under the UPC, the developed length of the trap arm from the trap weir to the inner edge of the vent is limited by the code's trap-arm table, and in no case may it be less than twice the diameter of the trap arm.

Venting a fixture that sits in the middle of a room, with no wall to run a vent up, is the classic island problem. Solutions exist — and which are acceptable depends on the code edition and the inspecting jurisdiction, so this is a question for your plumber and the building department rather than one to settle from an article. Ask it early: the answer can move where the island goes.

Putting a cooktop in the island

A cooktop introduces a third service — ventilation — and it is the one with the fewest good retrofit answers.

An island cooktop needs either a downdraft system integrated into the island, or an overhead hood ducted through the ceiling. A downdraft avoids ceiling work but has to be routed beneath the floor, returning you to the crawlspace-versus-slab question. An island hood requires a duct route through the ceiling above, which is straightforward in a single-storey home with attic space and considerably less so beneath a second storey or a flat roof.

Gas adds a supply line to the island, which is permitted trade work with its own inspection. Countertop and cabinetry — the visible cost

The part of the island you can see scales predictably with size and material, which makes it the easiest half of the budget to plan.

An island is a good place to spend on countertop material, because it is the surface everyone sees and touches, and its square footage is modest relative to a full perimeter run. It is also the place a waterfall edge is most often specified — which adds material and fabrication, since the slab continues down the side rather than stopping at the counter. Choosing an island specification

Cabinetry-only island

  • Storage and work surface are the real goals
  • The kitchen sits on a slab and services would mean cutting it
  • You would rather spend on countertop material than on trenching

Consider running a conduit or capped stub during construction if the floor is open anyway — retrofitting later costs far more.

Island with power only

  • You want small-appliance use and task charging at the island
  • There is a crawlspace or basement, or an overhead route exists
  • No plumbing fixture is needed in the middle of the room

Design the seating overhang and the receptacle location together — Idaho's below-counter allowance is limited to a 6 in. overhang.

Island with a prep sink

  • Two people cook at once and the main sink becomes a bottleneck
  • There is a viable drain route with fall to the existing waste line
  • Venting can be resolved with the local building department

Establish the venting answer before finalising the island position, not after the cabinetry is ordered.

Island with a cooktop

  • You want the cook facing the room rather than a wall
  • A ventilation route genuinely exists — attic above or floor below
  • Panel capacity supports induction, or a gas line can be run

Ventilation is the constraint that most often makes this unworkable in a retrofit. Confirm it first.

    A slab discovered late turns a sink island into either a major concrete scope or a redesign after cabinetry is already specified.

    Idaho's allowance for mounting a receptacle below the countertop does not apply where the surface extends more than 6 in. beyond its support base, so the two decisions conflict if made separately.

    Venting a fixture with no adjacent wall is jurisdiction-dependent. Discovering the constraint after demolition means redesigning under pressure.

    The island fits, and then the dishwasher door will not open fully with someone standing at the range. Aisle width is set by what happens with doors open, not closed.

Can an island be added to a kitchen that never had one?

Usually, provided the room has the clearances for it and there is a viable route for the services the island needs. A purely decorative island with no power, plumbing or ventilation is largely a question of floor space. As soon as the island carries a receptacle, a sink or a cooktop, the deciding factor becomes what sits under the floor. A crawlspace or basement below the kitchen makes routing straightforward. A concrete slab means cutting and patching the slab to reach the island location, which changes both the cost and the schedule substantially.

Does a kitchen island need an electrical outlet in Idaho?

Under the 2023 NEC, which Idaho enforces with amendments, a receptacle serving an island or peninsula countertop is not mandatory — but if one is not installed, provision must be made for adding one in future. Idaho then adds an important allowance of its own. IDAPA 24.39.10 adds a list item to NEC 210.52(C) permitting island and peninsula receptacles to be mounted up to 12 inches below the countertop or work surface, provided the countertop does not extend more than 6 inches beyond its support base. This matters because the unamended 2023 NEC removed that side-mounting allowance nationally. A great deal of national guidance published since 2023 therefore states a restriction that Idaho has amended. Confirm the detail with your electrician and the inspecting jurisdiction.

What does it take to put a sink in a kitchen island?

Is it cheaper to add an island with no plumbing or electrical?

Substantially, yes. A cabinetry-and-countertop island avoids the floor work, the trade coordination and the inspections that services require. The honest way to think about it is that an island's cost splits into two parts: the visible part, which is cabinetry and countertop and scales with size and material; and the invisible part, which is the route under the floor and is driven almost entirely by whether you have a crawlspace or a slab. Homeowners consistently underestimate the second. If budget is the binding constraint, an island without services delivers most of the storage and work surface for a fraction of the disruption.

How much space do you need around a kitchen island?

Enough that the island improves workflow rather than obstructing it — the failure mode of a retrofitted island is a room that looks better and works worse. Aisle width has to accommodate appliance doors opening, two people passing, and the swing of a dishwasher or oven door without colliding with the island. As a feasibility filter before you go further: measure the distance from the proposed island edge to every opposing cabinet run and appliance front, and check what happens when each appliance door is fully open.

Does adding an island require a permit in Boise?

A cabinetry-only island generally does not, but the electrical and plumbing work that makes an island functional is permitted trade work, and cutting a slab or altering floor framing to route services is structural. The City of Boise's residential alteration checklist distinguishes simple interior remodels from those involving structural or use changes, and requires the more detailed submittal for the latter. Because the permit trigger follows the services rather than the cabinetry, two islands that look identical can have entirely different permit paths. Confirm with the jurisdiction issuing your permit — Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Nampa, Caldwell, Kuna, Star and unincorporated Ada County each administer their own.
