The basement had vinyl plank flooring over a concrete slab, and the homeowner wanted a hard, water-tolerant floor instead. With the planks pulled up, the slab showed cracks and old adhesive residue — and cracks in a slab will telegraph straight through tile if it is set directly on top. The homeowner's goal was a floor that would hold up to water in the basement, so it mattered to be clear about what tile can and cannot do.
We prepped the slab across roughly 560 square feet, then applied a RedGard membrane over it. RedGard does two jobs here: it isolates the tile from cracks in the slab so they do not crack the tile above them, and it acts as a topical waterproofing layer against water that ends up on the floor. The homeowner's rectangular plank-style tile was then set in a staggered pattern across the basement, grouted and sealed, with silicone at the walls and changes of plane. We were direct with the homeowner that a membrane under tile stops spills and surface water — it does not stop groundwater or moisture pushing up through a slab, which is a drainage and grading job outside the house.
The basement now has one continuous tile floor running wall to wall in place of the old vinyl planks, over a crack-isolation membrane that protects the tile from the slab's cracks. The light, stone-look tile brightens the room, and the floor itself is not harmed if it gets wet.

Will a tile floor stop water from coming into my basement?
No. Tile and a membrane like RedGard protect against water on top of the floor — spills, a leaking appliance, a small plumbing leak. They do not stop groundwater or moisture pushing up through a slab. If water is entering from outside, the fix is exterior drainage and grading, and sometimes vapor mitigation, which is a separate job.
Why put a membrane under tile on a concrete slab?
Concrete slabs crack, and a crack set directly under tile will usually crack the tile above it. A crack-isolation membrane such as RedGard lets the slab move slightly without transferring that crack into the tile, and it adds a waterproof layer against water on the floor.
Is tile a good choice for a basement floor?
Tile bonds directly to the slab and is not damaged if it gets wet, which makes it a durable basement floor. The tradeoff is that it is harder and cooler underfoot than vinyl plank or carpet, so many homeowners add area rugs in living spaces.
