Resurfacing with composite is frequently excellent value, because you avoid new footings, posts and framing. The qualification is that the existing frame has to be both structurally sound and dimensionally compatible with the product.

Surface temperature tracks colour. On a south-facing Treasure Valley deck this is a comfort decision, not an aesthetic one.
6.Resurfacing with premium composite over a frame near the end of its life
A 25 to 50-year surface on a frame with a decade left means paying twice and discarding good boards when the frame is replaced.

Is composite decking maintenance-free?

Composite decking is genuinely low-maintenance compared with wood — it does not need staining or sealing, which is the single largest ongoing saving against a timber deck. It does need cleaning. Surface mould can still grow on any horizontal outdoor surface where organic debris sits, and mineral deposits and staining are possible. The accurate framing is that composite removes the periodic refinishing cycle rather than removing maintenance altogether, and that is what should be compared over a deck's life.
Does composite decking save money over time?
It costs more to install and removes the recurring cost of staining or sealing, so the comparison is between a higher initial cost and a lower ongoing one. Where the crossover falls depends on how diligently the timber alternative would actually have been maintained, on how long you intend to keep the deck, and on the specific products compared. What else does a composite deck need in Boise?
Beyond the deck itself, Idaho amends the National Electrical Code so that a balcony, deck or porch with an overall area of 20 square feet or more that is accessible from inside the dwelling must have at least one receptacle outlet within its perimeter, positioned no more than 6½ feet above the surface. Boise also requires a specific deck submittal — a framing plan, elevations and section views — and structural calculations stamped by an Idaho licensed engineer for decks taller than six feet above grade or for designs or materials not addressed in the IRC.
