The house had aging painted siding with shutters on the main two-story section and panel siding on the rear addition, plus original windows. Once the old siding came off, sections of sheathing underneath were damaged and could not be covered over — new siding on a bad substrate would have hidden the problem rather than fixed it.
We stripped the walls to the sheathing, replaced the damaged sections under a written change order before anything was covered, and wrapped the house in new house wrap. The 14 replacement windows went in with the wrap so each opening was flashed and taped into the new barrier instead of being cut into finished siding later. Mastic Ovation vinyl lap siding in Pebble Clay went on over the wrap, with white window trim and a white-trimmed bay window on the front. James Hardie soffit and fascia were installed and painted — the vinyl itself is factory-finished and needs no paint — and new 26-gauge steel gutters finished the roofline.
The home went from worn white siding and mismatched rear panels to one continuous gray exterior with crisp white trim and new windows on every side. The sheathing underneath is sound, the windows are flashed into a new weather barrier, and the vinyl and Hardie finishes do not need repainting to stay that way.

What siding was installed on this Boise home?
Mastic Ovation vinyl lap siding in the color Pebble Clay, installed over new house wrap after a full tear-off. The soffit and fascia are James Hardie, painted, and the house also got 14 replacement windows and 26-gauge steel gutters.
Should you replace windows at the same time as siding?
If the windows are due, yes. With the old siding off, each new window can be flashed and taped directly into the new weather barrier, and the siding and trim are built around it once. Replacing windows later means cutting into finished siding. On this Boise project we replaced 14 windows during the re-side.
What happens if damaged sheathing is found during a siding tear-off?
It gets replaced before the wall is covered. On this project we found damaged sheathing once the old siding came off, documented it, and replaced those sections under a written change order before installing house wrap and siding.
Does vinyl siding need to be painted?
No. Vinyl siding is factory-finished and is not painted. On this home the only painted surfaces were the James Hardie soffit and fascia.
